Advanced Q&A
Q. Why does "Chi" sound slightly sharper than the rest of the notes?
Q. How can I adjust a sharp Chi to be in tune?
- Because the sound of "Chi no Kari" is very hard to make so Chi was tuned a little sharper to make it easier. Later on they shifted style and used "Ha no Hanon" instead. Today Shakuhachi doesn't have a sharp Chi unless it was made for playing Honkyoku.

Q. How can I adjust a sharp Chi to be in tune?
- You can simply shade the #3 hole, blow a little softer or dip your head to the side. Or use a combination of the three. In time it will become second nature.
